Christy Morris

Christine Farris Morris was born and raised in Charleston , West Virginia .  

She is a graduate of Morris Harvey College , where she earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology, and the West Virginia University College of Law.  After receiving her undergraduate degree, Morris worked in the Washington , D.C. area establishing group homes for those with mental illnesses. Four years later, she returned to her home state to attend law school, graduating in 1983.  

Morris spent 12 years as a partner in a Barbour County law firm and served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in north central West Virginia from 1992 to 1996.  Beginning in 1989, she annually returned to Charleston for the 60-day legislative session to serve as the Public Education attorney to the West Virginia House of Delegates - Committee on Education.   

Upon the death of her father in late 1997, she returned to Charleston to live with and aid in the care of her mother.  Simultaneously she began serving the House of Delegates full-time as Chief Counsel to the Minor Committees.  On October 1, 2001 , she was named the first Deputy Secretary for the state Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety.  She later served 14 months as Acting Cabinet Secretary, returning to her position as Deputy Secretary upon the appointment of Cabinet Secretary Jim Spears in January 2005.  

She is currently admitted to practice before the United States District Court of both the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, the West Virginia Supreme Court and numerous West Virginia Circuit Courts; current member of the West Virginia State Bar, American Bar Association, West Virginia State Bar Foundation; and current committee member and emcee for the start of the Charleston Distance Run, a USA Track & Field course certified 15 mile race.  

She describes herself as the “always proud” and “sometimes patient” single mother of son, G.W., and daughter, Corey.
