Joan Smith
Joan Smith
has worked for the State of
West Virginia
for 30+ years. She
worked for the WV State Auditor’s Office for more than 17 years,
leaving there in the position of Lead Travel Audit Clerk/Second
Assistant to the Director of Auditing.
She accepted a job “she couldn’t refuse” with the WV
State Supreme Court of Appeals Administrative Office.
She worked for the Administrator for 10 years, working her
way up to Supervisor of Accounts Payable and serving (unofficially)
as Purchasing Director. Joan
left state government briefly to attend her ailing mother.
In January 2004 Joan applied for and accepted a position as
Committee Clerk for the Speaker of the House, House Government
Organization Committee. As
hoped, a door opened for her to assume her career full-time in state
government when she applied for and accepted the position of
Executive Assistant for the Cabinet Secretary of the Department of
Military Affairs and Public Safety.
As Executive Assistant, Joan’s priority is to the Cabinet
Secretary. She is the
Secretary’s scheduler, keeping his personal calendar as well as
the Shared Office Calendar. In
addition to this priority (but not limited to…) she performs such
duties as preparing correspondence, drafting letters, taking minutes
in meetings, coordinating conference calls, making travel
arrangements and preparing expense accounts, maintaining files,
coordinating employees annual and sick leave records, screening
constituent calls/e-mails, maintaining updated lists of all contact
information of the eleven Divisions under
DMAPS
, and lastly, deals with issues that are considered confidential and
sensitive in nature.
Within the Office of the Secretary Joan also holds the title of and
performs all functions as the Payroll Administrator, Accounts
Payable Clerk, Purchasing Clerk, Purchasing Card Coordinator,
P.E.I.A. Coordinator, Workers Compensation Administrator, and is the
EEO Coordinator for the Department.
When
Joan is on personal time she and her husband enjoy gardening,
traveling around to State Parks, and visiting daughters as much as
possible in sunny Pawleys Island, SC.
